The differences in product technology between multifunctional power meters and electricity meters primarily revolve around two aspects: application technology and product technology. The differences in application technology between the two types of meters

(1) Differences and Similarities in Technical Platforms

The function of an electricity meter is energy measurement. Typically, electricity meter manufacturers seal the energy measurement function within the meter according to regulatory requirements, prohibiting the addition of additional functions. Currently, the mainstream technical platform for electricity meters is the energy metering chip + MCU microcontroller platform. Electricity meter manufacturers do not need to perform complex algorithm processing.

However, multifunctional power meters, due to their more complex functional requirements, possess intelligent monitoring, control, and protection functions. Therefore, they employ digital AC sampling and various monitoring and analysis algorithms to achieve these functions. (2) Differences and Similarities in Communication Methods

The communication method of an energy meter is relatively simple compared to that of a multi-functional power meter, mainly based on the DL/T645 protocol. Real-time requirements are not high; the goal is simply to achieve meter reading functionality.

Multi-functional power meters primarily use fieldbus technology, requiring higher real-time performance and reliability. Due to the diverse application environments, various communication technologies are employed, including mainstream protocols such as Modbus and Profibus. Some multi-functional power meters also use ZigBee wireless networks for wireless data transmission.

Therefore, the communication technology of multi-functional power meters is more complex than that of energy meters.

(3) Differences and Similarities in Embedded Software Algorithms

Energy metering focuses on high accuracy and wide range, but with the continuous iteration of chip technology and the introduction of specialized energy measurement chips, the technical threshold has been lowered. Multi-functional power meters have complex and diverse functions; therefore, their embedded algorithms differ from those of energy meters. Multi-functional power meter technology emphasizes accuracy and real-time performance, and many algorithms are not available in energy meters.

The differences in application technology between multifunctional power meters and energy meters inevitably lead to differences in product technology. Energy meters are relatively homogeneous in design and technology, with lower technical barriers and fierce competition among manufacturers.
