Power Monitoring
KPM31 single-phase DIN Rail Prepaid Energy Meter integrates data acquisition and control functions
Learn MoreIn the process of enterprises promoting digital transformation and energy conservation, energy management in older buildings and factories often faces a thorny issue: how to achieve accurate energy monitoring without interrupting the existing power supply or rewiring? Traditional energy meter upgrades usually require disconnecting the power supply and dismantling the main bus or cables, which is extremely costly for factories with continuous production or data centers that cannot afford power outages. The emergence of Split-Core Current Transformer (CT) smart energy meters, with their "no plugging, no power interruption" characteristics, has become an ideal choice for retrofit projects.
Traditional CTs (closed-loop) are complete toroidal cores, requiring cables to pass through the core during installation. Split-Core CTs, on the other hand, use a detachable or hinged design, allowing them to be directly "clamped" onto existing wiring like a clip.
Coupled with smart meters integrating Internet of Things (IoT) modules, this system can not only collect real-time data on current, voltage, power factor, and energy consumption, but also upload the data to a cloud-based energy management platform via wireless or wired networks.
In old network renovation projects, time, cost, and business continuity are key considerations. The retractable CT IoT energy meter demonstrates overwhelming advantages in the following dimensions:
1. Zero Downtime
Because the current transformer can be directly clipped onto existing cables, the entire installation process does not require disconnecting the main power supply. This allows factories, hospitals, and commercial complexes to smoothly upgrade their energy consumption monitoring systems without affecting normal operations.
2. Construction Cost Reduction of Over 60%
It eliminates the need for dismantling busbars, rewiring, and cumbersome power outage approval processes. Construction personnel can complete the fixing of a single node's current transformer in just a few minutes, significantly shortening the construction period and reducing labor and engineering costs.
3. IoT-Enabled End-to-End Data Chain
Modern clamshell CT energy meters typically have a built-in or external wireless IoT gateway.
Multi-protocol support: Supports WiFi, 4G/5G, LoRa, or the traditional Modbus-RTU protocol.
Cloud collaboration: Data is uploaded in real-time, eliminating the limitations of manual meter reading or local area networks. Managers can monitor overall energy consumption via a mobile app or web interface.
| Scenarios | Retrofit Pain Points | Benefits of Split-Core CT IoT Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Factories & Industrial Automation | Power outages can cost tens of thousands of dollars per minute, making production halts unacceptable. | Enables precise "energy profiling" of large machinery and tracks carbon footprint without disrupting production lines. |
| Commercial Buildings & Green Hospitals | Continuous operation is required; complex, tangled wiring networks make traditional sub-metering impossible. | Allows rapid, step-by-step deployment to achieve sub-metering for HVAC, lighting, and power systems independently. |
| Data Centers & Telecom Base Stations | Extremely strict power reliability requirements (99.999% uptime) forbid any high-risk electrical intervention. | Zero-risk integration into existing power distribution cabinets to monitor real-time PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) metrics. |
While clamshell CT meters are extremely convenient to install, their measurement accuracy (typically 0.5 or 1 class) may be slightly lower than traditional closed CT meters under extremely low current conditions due to the gaps in the magnetic core. Therefore, they are best suited for internal enterprise energy consumption metering, equipment energy-saving diagnostics, and load monitoring, rather than trade metering for electricity bill settlement with the power grid.
IoT clamshell CT energy meters perfectly balance the contradiction between "high-precision monitoring" and "low installation cost." It enables enterprises to move beyond the "black box" state of energy management at minimal cost, laying a solid data foundation for subsequent AI-driven energy efficiency optimization, predictive equipment maintenance, and carbon reduction targets.
