An Essential Emergency Handbook for Smart Meter Users

An Essential Emergency Handbook for Smart Meter Users

You're watching a movie on a weekend evening when your house suddenly goes dark. Is it due to unpaid bills? A tripped circuit breaker? Or a burnt-out meter? Don't rush downstairs to call an electrician. Your smart energy meter is actually communicating with you through its screen. Once you understand the codes, you can solve 90% of power outage problems yourself.

First, check the screen: What alarm is it reporting?

Press the only query button on the meter and observe the combination of letters/numbers in the upper right or lower right corner of the screen:

"Err-01": Control circuit fault. This indicates a problem with the meter's internal hardware. Don't try to fix it; call the power company's hotline immediately. This is the power company's responsibility.

"Power off" or a "cross" icon: The relay has tripped.

"Insufficient balance": The meaning is obvious; pay the bill immediately.

Three Common Types of "False Power Outages" and Corresponding Solutions

1. Automatic Tripping Due to Overload

Symptoms: The air conditioner, water heater, and induction cooker are all running simultaneously, and the power suddenly goes out.

Principle: Smart meters have power monitoring functions. If your applied installed capacity is 5kW, but you actually use 8kW, the meter will automatically cut off for safety.

Solution: Turn off high-power appliances and wait 5-10 minutes. Some meters will automatically reconnect. If it doesn't reconnect automatically, press and hold the query button on the meter for 5 seconds to restore power.

2. Failure to Automatically Reconnect After Electricity Purchase

Symptoms: You've already recharged 200 yuan on your phone, but there's still no power after waiting for a long time.

Solution:

(1) Check the electricity purchase status in the mobile app to confirm that the purchase was successful.

(2) For card-operated meters, the card must be inserted into the meter to read the data.

(3) For meters with remote power purchase, if there's still no power, try pressing and holding the meter button to force the power purchase command. 3. Emergency Strategies for Power Outages Due to Unpaid Bills

Some smart meters in cities have an "emergency power" function (usually 10-20 yuan). If you are unable to recharge due to unpaid bills in the middle of the night, try inserting your electricity card backwards, or quickly pressing the query button 5 times consecutively to see if you can activate emergency power to maintain lighting.

Prevention: How to Make Your Smart Meter More compliant?

Link SMS Notifications: Ensure your mobile phone number is updated in the power system so you receive an immediate alert when your balance falls below 30 yuan.

Regularly Clean Circuit Breakers: It is recommended to press the leakage protection switch below the smart meter once a month to ensure it is not stuck. This is the last line of defense for your home's safety.
